MaedInIndia sneaks across India's borders in search of independent gems - Music

It all began on August 15. ‘MaedInIndia’ , India’s first indie music podcast showcasing the best Indian independent musicians from India and abroad sneaked across  to our neighbors with a mission to pick some musical gems.  Amidst the tension, it was an effort to build some bridges on a musical note.

“Considering the times we live in, which is tough and tense. I think it’s important that we all know and realise that despite the untoward circumstances that there is love and camaraderie between all of us, regardless of politics and borders,” the show notes to this special series said. MaedInIndia bring you songs from independent music scenes in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal.

The songs played in the last three episodes include,  the Sri Lankan group called The Soul, which played Lucky Child and Optical Illusion , DicTeyder , Pakistani pop duo Biryani Brothers which played their song Sab Theek Ho Jaye Ga,  Yugal Gurung and Jerusha Rai from Nepal  and  another indie band Sikandar Ka Mandar from Pakistan have been featured in this podcast series and it is a delight.

One of the Sri Lankan artists to be featured on ‘Our Neighbours’ is Shan Vincent de Paul, a Tamil Sri Lankan rapper based in Toronto.  Sikandar ka Mandar, another Pakistani band whose music was featured on the podcast had tweeted on August 14: “Advance mein Jashan Azadi Mubarak to you guys! Let projects like these be stepping stones towards tolerance and peace throughout the region…”

Mae Meriyam Thomas , that’s how the podcast gets its name, has come a long way from the time a listener had tagged her on social media ‘#Maedmyday’ after listening to an alternative music radio program she hosted in Chennai back in 2011. This message became the seed for her future podcast show ‘MaedinIndia’, which is today one of the most successful podcast show catering to a growing Indie (Independent) music culture in India. ‘Maed in India’ has posted more than 300 episodes since July 15, 2015.
