GANDHINAGAR: BBC Radio 5 Live’s hit podcast series “Gangster” is back with a gripping new season, this time delving into the unsolved murder of a man dubbed “the North East’s hardest doorman,” 30 years after the incident.
The six-part series, helmed by investigative journalist Livvy Haydock, dives deep into the underbelly of the North East, exploring the rise and fall of Viv Graham, a notorious enforcer who controlled Tyneside’s nightlife with an iron fist.
Haydock takes listeners on a captivating journey, weaving together the story of this 17-stone giant who ruled through violence and intimidation. She meticulously documents Graham’s life – from his humble beginnings in a quiet village to his descent into the ruthless world of organized crime.
The podcast sheds light on a man who inspired both fear and respect. Through interviews with his family, friends, and even former associates, Haydock paints a complex picture of Graham, exploring the motivations behind his actions and the life he led. Notably, the series also touches upon his connection to famed footballer Paul Gascoigne, who was deeply affected by his murder.
“In this series,” says Haydock, “I delve into the life and brutal death of Viv Graham. I wanted to understand the transformation of a young boy from a rural village into one of the country’s most feared enforcers. How did he become so powerful? What drove him? Who was the real Viv Graham?”
Haydock promises an “incredible story” filled with violence, drugs, love, betrayal, and the lingering mystery of an unsolved murder. Episodes one and two of “Gangster: The story of Viv Graham” are available on BBC Sounds from Friday 24th May, with two new episodes released weekly.
