The Hindi Podcast Genre Audit: Why News And Devotional Audio Lead Creator Stamina While Arts And Music Fade

GANDHINAGAR: An analysis of 30,543 Hindi-language feeds in the open-source Podcast Index database reveals that news and religious programming maintain the highest creator stamina in the Hindi audio market, averaging 38.34 and 30.93 episodes per feed, respectively.

By contrast, high-volume lifestyle categories such as Arts and Books average just 8.49 and 8.12 episodes before going silent. The category distribution shows that utility and routine drive long-term audio production, while self-expression categories fade quickly.

WHICH HINDI PODCAST CATEGORIES HAVE THE HIGHEST CREATOR STAMINA?

Creator stamina is measured by the average number of episodes published per feed. The data shows that while educational shows are the most common, news and religious podcasts keep their hosts recording for the longest period.

SECTION 1: THE DOMINANCE OF ROUTINE OVER SELF-EXPRESSION

The data shows that formats built around daily routines and regular work requirements achieve the highest episode output over time. News podcasts lead the Hindi database with an average of 38.34 episodes per show. While the category accounts for only 1,322 feeds, its creators show strong consistency. This pattern is driven by the professional nature of news production, which relies on daily current affairs roundups and planned editorial schedules.

Likewise, Religion (30.93 episodes) and Spirituality (30.94 episodes) show high stamina. These programmes are usually made up of devotional chants, bhajan recitations and daily readings from texts such as the Bhagavad Gita and Ramayana. Creators in these genres are often driven by spiritual commitment rather than financial gain, and listeners consume the content as part of a daily ritual. This shared commitment keeps feeds active far longer than most entertainment genres.

By contrast, categories focused on self-expression show quick creator drop-off. Arts podcasts, made up largely of independent poets reciting Shayari, average only 8.49 episodes before going silent. Music podcasts perform even worse, averaging just 6.56 episodes. Independent musicians and writers use open RSS feeds to share a few early tracks or poems, but many stop when they fail to build an audience or cover hosting costs.

SECTION 2: THE ACADEMIC UTILITY MODEL

Education is the largest category in the Hindi directory, accounting for 6,130 feeds (20.07% of the catalogue). However, these shows maintain an average of only 11.84 episodes.

This gap suggests that educational podcasting in India works mainly as a short-term practical tool. These feeds are created by local teachers and test-preparation centres to distribute audio flashcards, general knowledge quizzes and lecture summaries for competitive examinations such as the UPSC and SSC.

Once the exam season ends, or the creator shifts to video-based platforms, the RSS feed is often abandoned. Rather than becoming long-running media channels, these podcasts serve as temporary study aids, leaving behind thousands of short-lived archives.

SECTION 3: THE NARRATIVE AND ENTERTAINMENT GAP

While comedy and fiction dominate Western podcast networks, they remain small and largely inactive in the open Hindi RSS space. Comedy accounts for 1,463 feeds (4.79%) with an average of 11.19 episodes. Fiction accounts for 1,701 feeds (5.57%) with an average of 13.47 episodes.

Several factors help explain this gap:

  1. Visual Competition
Indian comedy and entertainment are highly visual. Creators favour platforms such as YouTube and Instagram Reels, which offer built-in discovery systems and direct advertising revenue.
  2. Production Costs
Creating high-quality audio dramas or scripted comedy requires professional writers, multiple voice actors and detailed sound design. Without upfront funding, independent creators often struggle to keep these shows running beyond a few episodes.

METHODOLOGY NOTE: OPEN RSS VS. CLOSED AUDIO APPS

This category analysis is based on the open RSS web, where feeds are shared freely across the internet. It does not include closed, subscription-based applications.

In India, platforms such as Pocket FM and Kuku FM host highly successful audio drama series and audiobooks that do not publish public RSS feeds. As a result, while the open Hindi podcast directory shows high turnover in fiction and drama, the subscription-based audio entertainment market remains a separate and commercially active market.
